AFCAT Exam Info
The Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) is a prestigious examination conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) to recruit Class 1 Gazetted Officers in Flying and Ground Duties, both Technical and Non-Technical branches. With numerous candidates aspiring to join the Air Force Academy, AFCAT is one of the most sought-after exams. To crack this competitive exam, it is essential to have a thorough understanding of important dates, eligibility criteria, selection process, exam pattern and syllabus
Important Dates:
The application window for AFCAT 1, 2024 will close on December 30, 2023. The detailed notification and application form were released on December 1, 2023. The online test for AFCAT 1, 2024 is scheduled to be conducted on February 16, 17, and 18. Candidates should carefully read the AFCAT 1, 2024 notification before applying. The admit cards for AFCAT 1, 2024 will be available for download from February, 2024.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for the AFCAT exam, candidates must fulfill certain criteria in terms of nationality, age limit, educational qualification, and physical standards.
Nationality: Candidates must be citizens of India as per the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955.
Age Limit: The age limits vary for different branches. For the Flying Branch, candidates should be between 20 and 24 years of age. However, the upper age limit is relaxed up to 26 years for candidates with a Commercial Pilot License. For the Ground Duty (Technical & Non-Technical) Branch, the age should be between 20 and 26 years.
Marital Status: Candidates below 25 years of age must be unmarried at the time of commencement of the course. Widows/Widowers and divorcees below 25 years are not eligible. Married candidates above 25 years can apply, but they are not provided married accommodation during the training period.
Educational Qualification: The educational qualification varies for different branches. For the Flying Branch, candidates must have passed Class 12 with a minimum of 60% in Mathematics and Physics, along with a graduation degree in any discipline, BE/BTech, or equivalent qualifications. For the Ground Duty Technical Branch, candidates must have passed Class 12 with 60% in Physics and Mathematics, along with a four-year degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent qualifications. The educational qualifications for the Ground Duty (Non-Technical) branches include graduation in any discipline with a minimum of 60% or equivalent qualifications.
Physical and Medical Standards:
Candidates must be medically and physically fit to carry out their duties and responsibilities effectively. The detailed physical and medical standards can be found in the official AFCAT notification.
Selection Process:
The AFCAT selection process consists of various stages:
Release of Application Form: Interested candidates need to fill the application form online and pay the required fees.
Issue of Admit Card: Admit cards are released on the official website, and candidates can download them using their login credentials.
Appearing in the Exam: AFCAT is an online exam that assesses candidates in General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English, Numerical Ability and Reasoning, and Military Aptitude Test. The duration of the test is two hours, and it carries 300 marks. Candidates applying for the Ground Duty (Technical) branch also need to appear for the Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT), which focuses on specific technical subjects. The duration of the EKT exam is 45 minutes, and it carries 150 marks.
Declaration of Result: The results of the online test are announced online. Candidates can check their results on the official website of the Indian Air Force. The result displays the overall marks obtained by the candidates.
AFSB Testing: Shortlisted candidates are called for the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) testing. The AFSB testing is a comprehensive evaluation process that includes various stages such as Officer Intelligence Rating Test, Psychological Test, Group Tests, and Personal Interview. These tests assess the candidate’s aptitude, leadership qualities, and suitability for a career in the Indian Air Force.
Medical Examination: Candidates who qualify the AFSB testing undergo a detailed medical examination conducted by Air Force Medical Authorities. The medical standards ensure that the candidates are physically and mentally fit to perform their duties in the Air Force.
Merit List and Final Selection: The final selection of candidates is based on their performance in the AFCAT online test, AFSB testing, and medical examination. A merit list is prepared, and candidates are selected based on their overall ranking and the number of vacancies available.
Syllabus and Exam Pattern:
The AFCAT exam consists of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and is conducted online. The exam pattern includes the following sections:
General Awareness: This section tests the candidate’s knowledge of current affairs, history, geography, sports, politics, etc.
Verbal Ability in English: This section assesses the candidate’s proficiency in English grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and sentence completion.
Numerical Ability: This section evaluates the candidate’s mathematical skills and problem-solving abilities.
Reasoning and Military Aptitude: This section tests the candidate’s logical reasoning, spatial ability, and military aptitude.
For candidates applying for the Ground Duty (Technical) branch, an additional Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT) is conducted. The EKT focuses on technical subjects related to the branch.
