The National Defence Academy (NDA) Exam is a highly competitive exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) twice a year. It is the gateway to joining the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force as an officer. This article provides a comprehensive guide for aspirants preparing for the NDA Exam.
The NDA Exam is a national level exam conducted by the UPSC for admission to the Army, Navy, and Air Force wings of the NDA and Indian Naval Academy Course (INAC). The exam is conducted twice a year in April and November. The selection process consists of a written exam followed by an SSB interview.
NDA Exam Eligibility Criteria
- Age Limit: The candidate must be between 16.5 to 19.5 years old on the first day of the month in which the course is due to commence.
- Educational Qualification: The candidate must have passed the 10+2 examination or equivalent from a recognized board.
- Nationality: The candidate must be a citizen of India, or a subject of Bhutan, or a subject of Nepal, or a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January 1962.
NDA Exam Exam Pattern
The NDA Exam consists of two papers – Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT). Both papers are conducted on the same day, with a total duration of 5 hours.
- Mathematics: 120 questions for 300 marks (2.5 hours)
- GAT: 150 questions for 600 marks (2.5 hours)
NDA Exam Syllabus
The syllabus for the NDA Exam is based on the 10+2 level for Mathematics and GAT. The GAT section includes English, General Knowledge, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, Geography, and Current Events.
Physical Fitness and Medical Standards
Physical fitness is an important aspect of the NDA Exam. Candidates must meet the physical fitness and medical standards set by the Indian Armed Forces.
NDA Exam SSB Interview
The SSB interview is the final stage of the selection process. It consists of two stages – Stage I and Stage II. Stage I includes Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests and Picture Perception and Description Test (PP&DT). Candidates who qualify for Stage I are eligible for Stage II, which includes Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks (GTO Tasks), and Conference.

- A candidate becomes eligible for NDA (2) when he/she is in 12th class. NDA (2) is conducted around the month of September. If the aspirant starts preparing from 9th he can clear NDA exam easily while he/she is in 12th class.
- After 10th the candidate has 2 years to prepare and hone his/her communication skills, personality and other OLQs for SSB, for which otherwise the candidate wont have much time.
